new jersey government chris christie vetoed a bill to set up a new jersey-run exchange echoing other governors' claims over uncertainty of the cost for the states. how is that california, the state that will run the largest insurance market in the country has not only decided to run its own exchange but has managed to figure out a way to do it without touching a single dollar of its state general fund. hmm. >> finally, let's take the tally. republicans lost their fight against the aca when president obama first signed it. they lost again when the supreme court upheld it. then they lost one last time when the american people handed the president a mandate on aca by re-electing him. when exactly are the republicans going to give up the fight that they've already lost three times? hmm. with me at the table, new york university constitutional law professor, kenji yoshino. donna edwards of marylandment senior fellow, bob herbert and jayening off, the former director of consumer insurance oversight at the u.s. department of health and human services. nice to have you all here. >> a long in

at the end of the day, chris christie is is aware of it. his number one priority has to be to people of new jersey that he is working on this. having an event with mitt romney would seem very political. i think he had the right response. maybe he was a bit more confrontational than i would be. the substance of this is the right one. the fact that we have politicians reaching across the aisle is something we should separate and start looking at their motives cynically. that's what also feeds distressed government. >> i would agree we should embrace this idea of a bipartisan moment. the fact is, it doesn't have to happen that way. living in louisiana with bobby jindal during the last hurricane, during isaac, when i lost a home, jindal refused to allow the president on the ground initially, embraced and accepted romney. it is not to say that there is a pure cynical motive on the part of him. >> bobby jindal looks much smaller today because of what governor christie did. >> we should note that earlier this morning, new york governor, andrew cuo

it was all about chris christie. he's my governor. >> good for him. he should tout that. >> that became the line, they kept forgetting to mention him until the last five minutes. >> the party is not one person. it's a group of people. this is a moment to build unity and excitement, and i think he was very successful in doing that. >> well, the one thing he wasn't successful in doing, though, was promoting mitt romney. he waited until, i think, 16 minutes in before he even mentioned his name. it was so self-promoting. i have to just say that chris christie, to me, is the best advertisement for anti-bullying legislation because the guy -- he's my governor. he's a total bully. it's not pleasant. >> it's interesting that he would use the word "truth." i mean, it was the kind of truth that george orwell wrote about with the ministry of truth. they were presenting, quote, truth and presenting lies at the same time. >> let me push on this truth question because we did hear that from christie, from ryan, also this idea that we're the people who will tell you

before the break, althea, you were talking about chris christie who said he will, in fact he did veto the same sex marriage equality bill that came out of the new jersey legislature. >> i think this is a case of -- this is chris christie looking at his back and thinking i'm hopefully maybe i can be a vp candidate. he said something very interesting. i want to sort of put him in juxtaposition to mayor cory booker of newark. he wanted this to be a vote and cory booker said you can't vote on somebody's civil rights. i thought, this is the best argument i have ever heard and booker was right. i don't want -- >> absolutely. if we had voted on civil right, you and i may not be here at this table. >> i think pretty much everybody at the table would not be at the table actually. >> i think this is one of the moments in which i think the president will have to think about that the motion is moving. and that will he move along, will he evolve quickly enough to meet with the rest of the states. i know that this is going to be a fight for several state. we had maryland approve this. >> right. >>
